Tigger or Eeyore

Tigger or Eeyore

“I’m tired of being Eeyore,” my friend told me. I was at the hospital with her when her father died. He was recovering from stomach ulcer surgery and coded when the staff were moving him back into his bed after returning from some tests. I’m tired of being Eeyore. I’m tired of being depressed. I’m tired of feeling like I’ve lost my tail. When am I permitted to feel joy again? She wanted permission to be Tigger.

What does it mean to be Tigger? My minister talked today about living like Tigger. Tigger is happy. Tigger likes to bounce. Tigger is unique. And Tigger is proud to be these things.

The wonderful thing about tiggers
Is tiggers are wonderful things!
Their tops are made out of rubber;
Their bottoms are made out of springs!
They're bouncy, trouncy, flouncy, pouncy,
Fun! Fun! Fun! Fun! Fun!
But the most wonderful thing about tiggers is
I'm the only one!

Just reading the words is fun. Life is fun. Find something fun to do every day. As far as we know we only have one go around at this. Don’t wake up at 65 and discover you wasted your life and did not have any fun. My friend’s father had fun, every day. Perhaps too much on some days. I used to see him every Friday evening on the way home from work. He was always smiling and enjoying each day. I don’t think he had any regrets (accept for dying too young).

One morning you will wake up on your last day. So, while being Eeyore is unavoidable at times, allow yourself to be Tigger as often as possible.

Is fun and happiness the same thing? Is life about having fun or the seeking of pleasure? Learning to be content with what you have and accepting you won't have everything you want leads to contentment and happiness. A life of fun can be meaningless and empty.
